I confess it was a lovely relaxing experience you simply run a bath and pop the sachet into the bath water and relax . . . . you will find a link to Witchie Jessie youtube below. Wiccan Tools

Athame

This is a two edged knife and usually has a black handle some witches only use the athame to direct energy and never use it to cut anything, others use it for all magical applications and some use it in the kitchen for cooking. There is also another knife called a Boline which is also used see Boline below.

Altar

The alter is your work space and really it is the first thing you will need to have for all your magickal workings, this doesn't have to be fancy or involve taking up a lot of room something simple and small is just as good and it is personal to you so choose what works best for you. You can be elaborate or simple the choice is yours.

Altar cloths

These come in all shapes and sizes and they are used on the alter, you can of course make them your self in different colours to represent each of the sabbats or just to decorate your altar

Amulets

These are nature made objects used for protection or for magickal intent

Bell

Normally used to invoke the Goddess or to ward of negativity and some use it during a ritual to signify the beginning or ending of a certain part of a ritual or spell.

Book of shadows

One of the most important items to have it is a book for all your magickal workings you should record all of your rituals, spells, thoughts and any other information you want to put in it. You can buy a fancy journal or have a ring binder the choice is yours as to how fancy you want it. I actually made my own which makes it special to me.

Boline

Is traditionally a white handled curved knife, used to cut herbs, sigils into candles and cords, with in a cast circle. Although today not always a curved blade, a Boline is a female knife and sacred to the Goddess.

Broom

Sometimes called a besom, the broom is used to sweep away negativity and purify the space. You can of course make your own broom from birch twigs and using willow to bind it together. When doing handfastings couples use it to jump over to solomise their union. It is considered unlucky to move the broom from one house to another so if your moving house leave your broom behind and either make or buy another one for your new home.

Candles

Different coloured candles are used for many different spells and personally for me you ca never have enough candles in all colours of the rainbow! See candles under the wiccan essentials on the left for all your candle needs.

Cauldron

Used for cooking, brewing and candle making the cauldron has many uses and a good quality one can last you many years.

Censer

This is used to burn incense always put some sand, or kitty litter into the base this will help to prevent cracking

Chalice

The chalice is used for food and drink or you may simply place it on your alter and fill with water to represent the element of water

Diving tools

Black mirrors, tarot, angel cards, runes, numerology, I-ching and also a candle flame

Herbs

Herbs can be used for magickal purposes for spells, having in sachets and their are many herbs these days see herbs on my link on the left. They are often burnt during a spell or a ritual

Incense burner

There are many different designs on the market and essential if you want to burn on charcoal and use good incense.

Pentacle

A pentacle is a flat disk and can be made of metal or wood it is inscribed with a pentagram. Personally I have two one is silver which I wear all the time on a necklace and the other is always on my altar.

Oils

Essential oils are used for anointing candles, tools, the alter and the body in spell working. All herbs and oils have their own energies and are essential for the craft.

Stones and Crystals

Tumblestones and crystals are also essential to the craft and their are many to choose from see my link for information on all the tumblestones.

Wand

Traditionally the wand should be made of wood and by the person who is going to use it, if your unable to do this then the wand you buy you should handle as often as possible to allow your energies and sending your thoughts into the object.

Bread Dough Wreath Lammas

You will need the following items

Mixing bowl

plastic wrap

cookie sheet

aluminum foil

rolling pin

toothpicks

fork; knife

wire rack

paintbrush for varnish or shellac.

Bread dough recipe below; whole cloves; varnish or shellac; epoxy cement.

Bread Dough Recipe: 4 cups flour; 1 cup salt; 1 1/2 cups warm water; 1 tsp. instant tea (heaping).

Mix the flour and salt together. To the 1 1/2 cups warm water, add 1 heaping teaspoon of plain instant tea. Dissolve well; let cool. Add liquid tea to flour mixture; mix very well with hands. Knead until smooth. Roll into ball; cover with plastic wrap.

Directions

Cover cookie sheet with aluminum foil. Preheat oven to 300° F.

Pinch off a large piece of dough; roll into a long sausage shape, then shape into a circle on cookie sheet. Wet ends and press together. Circle may be any size you desire, but keep in mind how much dough you have left with which to add ornamentation. Our wreath, without decorations, has approximately an 8" outer diameter with a 5" diameter centre opening, and is about 1/2" thick.

To decorate wreath

pinch off pieces of dough and roll out with rolling pin or flatten with hands to about 1/4" thickness.

Cut out leaf shapes with knife.

Score each leaf with knife to mark the vein lines.

Moisten back of each leaf with a little water; press on wreath.

Make the largest fruit next (apples, pears, peaches).

Press whole cloves into dough for stems and core ends of fruit: for stems of apples and pears, push clove bud into dough, leaving the stem end out; for the core ends of fruit, press in the stem end of the clove, exposing just the bud from which the ball of clove has been removed.

Wet the wreath circle and attach the fruit pieces. Fill in spaces with clusters of grape, strawberry, nut, and a few plum shapes. Imprint texture and lines with toothpick or fork.

To make bow

roll out dough to 1/4" thickness; cut a long strip (20" x 24") about 1 1/4" wide.

Fold and pinch strip into bow; cut away ends as illustrated.

Place bow separately on foil-covered cookie sheet.

Bake wreath and bow in preheated 300° F. oven for 3 hours or until completely dry and hard (if bow is done before wreath, tear foil and remove bow from oven). Place on wire rack and let cool. Peel off foil. Leave on rack for several days in dry place.

Coat wreath and bow separately with varnish or shellac. When dry, cement bow to wreath, using epoxy cement as directed on package.

Apple crafts for Mabon

Do you remember the last time you were in someone's home that had an apple pie baking in the oven? Ahhh, the aromas of a fresh baked pie -- it is simply irresistible!

Well, now you can recreate this delicious scent in your own home, or in the homes of your loved ones, by making dried cinnamon scented apple crafts. None of them are hard to make and results are wonderful! Hang one of these on your wall and you will surely impress all of your guests.

For each apple craft, you will need

Juice of approximately 8-10 lemons

2 teaspoons salt

8 - 10 large firm apples

8 teaspoons cinnamon

2 teaspoons allspice

1 teaspoon cloves

8" - 10" sturdy, heavy gauge wire (for a wreath)

Jute (for garland or apple stacker)

1 - 1 1/2 yards of ribbon or fabric scraps

To prepare and dry your apples

Place lemon juice in a large bowl, and stir in salt.

Peel, core, and slice apples horizontally into 1/4" thick circles. Soak slices in lemon juice bowl for approximately 6-10 minutes, making sure each side of the slices has a chance to absorb some of the lemon juice.

Meanwhile, mix spices in a bowl and blend well.

Remove the slices from the bowl and place them on paper towels. Pat tops of apple slices with paper towels.

Dust apples slices with spice mixture. Turn slices over and repeat on opposite side.

Place apples slices in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake at 150-200 degrees F for 6 hours or until completely dried. Apple slices should be slightly pliable.

To Create An Apple Wreath

1) Fold each apple slice in half, and then into quarters and thread the apples slices onto the wire. Continue to pack on the folded apples until the wire is completely filled.

2) When the wire is completely covered, use pliers to bend ends into hooks so that they can connect and close. Carefully shape wire into desired shape. I recommend either a circle or heart shape.

3) Using your ribbon or fabric scraps, create a hanger for your wreath. 4) Hang on your wall, or package as a gift for someone special.

To Create An Apple Garland

Cut of enough jute for your desired length of garland - remember, your apple garland shouldn't be too long, but approximately 2-4 works well. Also, it is always better to have too much, than not enough.

2) Start stringing on apple slices. Push one end of jute through the middle of each apple slice.

3) Consider alternating several apple slices and then a piece of tied on fabric strip.

4) Hang on your wall

To Create An Apple Stacker

1) Using an approximate 12" piece of jute, tie one end to about three cinnamon sticks that are laid in a a bundle.

2) Being to string on apple slices by pushing jute through the center of each slice. Consider alternating several slices with a piece of fabric tied on.

3) When apple stacker is the desired length, end with three more cinnamon sticks in a bundle and tie a loop so that you can hang your apple stacker proudly!

Wheat Centerpiece for Mabon

Wheat Centerpiece

Bring the beauty that is Fall into your home with this dramatic centerpiece. You can place this on your dining room table for holiday entertaining, or on a side table or mantle for a decorative accent.

Supplies:

2 pkgs. Blonde Wheat
1 pkg. Transparent Oak Leaves
1 pkg. Fall Eucalyptus
2 Chenille Stems, each cut in half (or use wire covered with floral tape)
4 Gourd Picks
2, 6" strands of ivy garland
3 Gifts From The Earth^TM Apples
1 pkg. Dried Salal (lemon leaves)
Glue Gun

Directions:

Separate wheat into two groups. Hold one group under wheat heads. Secure cluster with chenille stem to create a binding point. Repeat for other group.
Overlap the heads of the two wheat sheaf groupings. Use chenille stem to bind stems between wheat heads. (Remainder of wheat stems extends beyond other grouping's heads.)
Cut apart oak and salal leaves, creating clusters. Position atop and beneath the wheat sheaf. Place stems of the leaves into the binding points to secure. Glue if necessary.
Split eucalyptus in half. Place each group into a binding point, facing in the same direction as the wheat. Glue if necessary to secure.
Add salal in the same fashion.
Glue fruit to the wheat, leaves, and eucalyptus bundle. Apply glue directly to fruit and to stems of picks before inserting into centerpiece.
Add ivy bunches to top. Glue in place.

Tip:

When clustering wheat heads, be sure to twist chenille gently so wheat is not cut by the binding.

Glastonbury

Glastonbury is a small town in Somerset, England and situated 31 miles south of Bristol, with a population of approx 10,000.

Glastonbury is a rather different and lively small town and one that is steeped in history, myths and legends, and thereby giving rise to its popularity as a ‘new age’ destination. Various myths include Glastonbury as the final resting place for King Arthur and the Holy Grail, and for such a small town there is much to see including the 7th century Glastonbury Abbey, Glastonbury Tor and the Chalice Well. However, Glastonbury is probably best known for its legendary annual Glastonbury Festival, which can be best described as Britain’s original rock festival.

Glastonbury’s early history is linked with it’s dominant landmark, the Tor, a nearby hill which rises up from the otherwise flat landscape of the Somerset Levels. On its summit is a tower, the mortal remains of the fourteenth century chapel of St. Michael, which gives the Tor a mysterious and gothic appearance. In the middle ages, dedications to the archangel Michael were usually for the purpose of protection or purification, which seems appropriate, since the top of Glastonbury Tor was traditionally believed to be the entrance to the Celtic underworld, Annwn.

Joseph of Arimathea was the Biblical figure who took Jesus’ body after the crucifixion. After fleeing Palestine he arrived in Britain bringing with him the Holy Grail, the cup used by Jesus at the Last Supper. It is said he was to have established the first church in England at Glastonbury, with archaeological records confirming that there may very well have been an early Christian church there. The Holy Grail has never been found but legend has it that it was buried by Joseph at the foot of Glastonbury Tor. Others have it that the Holy Grail was interred with Joseph when he died, in a secret grave. The search for the mysterious Grail emerges again and again in the tales of Glastonbury.

By the late Middle Ages Glastonbury Abbey had become the richest in England due to the heavy pilgrimage trade and certainly rich enough to build an inn for the more well-to-do pilgrims. The George Inn, on nearby High Street is one of the countries oldest surviving Inns and still welcomes guests today. The best preserved building in the abbey grounds is the old Abbot’s Kitchen, a curious square building which appears round due to its octagonal roof. In the abbey grounds are the reputed graves of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere, which are said to have been conveniently discovered by the Glastonbury monks in the 12th century when the abbey needed a financial boost. Outside the grounds is the abbey tithe barn which now serves as the Somerset Rural Life Museum.

Glastonbury received national media coverage in 1999 when cannabis plants were found in the town’s floral displays. Today, Glastonbury is a centre for religious tourism and pilgrimage. Mysticism and paganism do co-exist, however, not always so easily with followers of its Christian heritage.

The Avebury Ring

The Avebury ring is found in Avebury in the county of Wiltshire. It is located about twenty miles to the north of Stonehenge and is approximately ninety miles to the west of London.

The Avebury ring is the oldest stone ring that is known to be in existence anywhere in the world and is even older than Stonehenge. The stone circle at Avebury is bigger (16 times the size), less touristy, and, for many, more interesting than Stonehenge. You’re free to wander among 100 stones, ditches, mounds, and curious patterns from the past, as well as the village of Avebury, which grew up in the middle of this fascinating, 1,400-foot-wide neolithic circle.

The large circle contains a grass bank that measures about 427m in diameter and reaches as high as six meters. Within the grass area is an inner ditch that can be entered via four entrances at each of the points on a cardinal compass.

After passing through the ditch visitors come upon a large circle of sarsen stones that wrap around about 28 acres of land. It is thought that the circle must have originally contained about 98 stones in order to complete the circle, but all that is remaining to the present day are 27 stones.

Within the circle of massive stones are two smaller stone circles that sit inside the centre of the Avebury ring. One is located in the Northern sector of the Avebury ring and there are four of the 27 stones left today. The other is in the Southern sector of the ring and has five or the original 29 stones still standing. In the 14th century, in a kind of frenzy of religious paranoia, Avebury villagers buried many of these mysterious pagan stones. Their 18th-century descendants hosted social events in which they broke up the remaining pagan stones (topple, heat up, douse with cold water, and scavenge broken stones as building blocks). In modern times, the buried stones were dug up and re-erected. Concrete markers show where the missing broken-up stones once stood.

It is speculated that the inner circles were created first in about 2600BC while the outer circle and ditch were created later in 2500BC.

Each of the stones is suspected to weigh upwards of 40 tons with heights that measure over twenty feet thus implying that the local inhabitants must have worked together in order to complete the Avebury Ring. Additionally, each stone was placed into holes in the earth that measured anywhere between six and 24 inches.

The ditch also would have required a large amount of effort to form with the need to chop away about 200,000 tons of rocks. There are also some remnants of erosion that suggest the ditch may have at one time been filled up with water making the stone rings appear to be sitting on an island.

Excavation studies have shown that there were 154 stones total when the Avebury ring was first built out of which 36 total are still standing.

There are three theories about why the stones may have been removed, the first two have to do with modernization in which the stones were moved so that crops could be planted and the rock could be used to build foundations of homes and shops. The third theory is that in the 14th century the stones may have been broken up by Christian authorities in an attempt to remove pagan religion from the area.

It is often speculated that the Avebury ring was part of a large serpent design that passed through a circle to form an alchemical symbol and that the area may have been part of a temple. Its exact use by ancient civilizations has not yet been fully understood.

Various Wiccan Traditions

Alexandrian Wicca

In the early days the original rituals of the tradition are thought to have been Gardnerian, plagiarized by Alex and embellished with a few of his own amendments. These he then used to found his own coven from which emerged the Alexandrian Tradition. Today although still similar to Gardnerian in terms of its hierarchical structure, the Alexandrian Tradition tends to be more eclectic and liberal, focusing strongly on ceremonial magick.

Druidic Witchcraft

Druidic Witchcraft is an eclectic tradition, drawing its beliefs and practices from a variety of sources. These include elements of the Druid religion, as well as Irish, Celtic, and Gardnerian beliefs. Their coven training consists of a degree structure similar to that advocated by other traditions. The International Red Garter is perhaps their most popular Order at this time.

Druidic Witchcraft should not be confused with that of the Druid Religion, which is entirely different. Druids are not witches and do not practice magick, though there are many links and similarities between the two. For instance, the traditional cauldron of the witches is in likeness to the Sacred Cauldron of Inspiration, which is presided over by the Goddess Cerridwen, who is revered by the Bards and Druids.

Other similarities include the four great annual festivals celebrated by the Druids, these mark the four changing seasons; Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn, and are identical to the four great Sabbats celebrated by witches. The Druids also celebrate the lesser Sabbats, the solstices and equinoxes, known to them by their Druidic names as the four Albans; Alban Arthan – the winter solstice, Alban Eilir – the spring equinox, Alban Hefin – the summer solstice, and Alban Elfed – the autumn equinox.

The Druids in common with witches hold to a belief in reincarnation. They are taught that the human soul has to pass through a number of existences while in Abred, the Circle of Necessity, before attaining to Gwynvyd, the Circle of Blessedness. Abred was the condition of earthly existence, but once transcended and its lessons learned, the soul would return to it no more. Three things hold back the soul’s progression to achieve Gwynvyd - Pride, Falsehood, and Cruelty.

Celtic Wicca

The Celtic tradition is based on an eclectic blend of materials, beliefs and practices taken from the pre-Christian, Celtic and Gaulish peoples of Northern Europe, including Gaul, Ireland, Wales, and Scotland. This tradition has obvious close links with the Druids, who of old were the “wise men” and “priests” of the ancient pagan Celts and Gaul’s. The Celtic tradition is an earth-based tradition, and has a strong focus on its religious belief’s.

Many aspects of Christianity, as adopted by the church, were taken from ancient Celtic beliefs. The “Holy Grail” can be attributed to the pagan’s “Cerridwyn’s Cauldron”, likewise the Celtic pagan goddess “Brigit” became the Christian’s “Saint Bride”.

Dianic Wicca

Dianic Wicca is a relatively new phenomenon in relation to traditional witchcraft, though the goddess Diana has been revered since ancient times. Zsuzsanna Budapest of California founded the tradition in the United States during the 1970’s, and in the early 70’s was arrested and tried for her belief’s.

Dianic Wicca is a feminist religion, for women only. They honour the deities in their feminine aspects only, and never invoke the God or other male aspects into their rituals or sacred spaces. This practice has caused many conflicts and heated discussions amongst its members. Aside from this exclusion of men, they follow the same ritual paths and beliefs as other Wiccan traditions.

Many Dianic members are politically active in the feminist movement, striving to lift the oppression of female rights, and to bring about the equality of the sexes into all walks of life. This is not a requirement of the tradition; its left to the individual to make her own stand and practice her own beliefs.

Eclectic Wiccan

An eclectic Wiccan as the term implies doesn't follow any strict traditional guidelines in their practice of the craft. Eclectic Wicca includes a broad range of groups and individuals who have based their philosophies, rituals and practices on a wide and varied number of sources, and practice only those beliefs that suit them best. They often mix traditions and practices together in order to find that which most suits their own circumstances, lifestyles and religious belief’s, practicing whatever magic they consider obtains best results. This is mostly of modern origin for previously Wiccan traditions had more restricting boundaries.

Eclectic Wicca emphasizes spontaneity and therefore plays down the importance of such concepts as Initiations, Oaths, Tradition and Lineage. Critics claim that the majority of Eclectic practitioners take the position that Wicca is a completely modern religion created by Gerald Gardner, and that the beliefs and practices of Wicca are completely individualistic, therefore nobody can define “Wicca” for others. Many traditional Wiccans object to these groups using the name Wicca, and believe their practice should simply be called Eclectic Witchcraft.

Feri Wiccan

The Feri Tradition, (also known as the Faery or Faerie tradition) was founded by Victor and Cora Anderson in the mid-late 1950’s, when they were inspired to form their own tradition after reading a book by Gerald B Gardner “Witchcraft Today”. Anderson based the tradition on fairy folklore and beliefs and was universally recognized as the Grand Master of the Feri Tradition. In 1959, Anderson initiated Gwydion Pendderwen and together they were responsible for writing most of the tradition’s rituals, later adding Alexandrian and Celtic influences.

An old African priestess initiated Victor Anderson into Witchcraft in 1926, they practiced a form of Witchcraft with Huna and African influences that was primarily Dahomean-Haitian. Anderson was one of the last genuine Kahuna. Some of these earlier influences he incorporated into the new Feri tradition. After visiting an Alex Sanders coven in England, Pendderwen incorporated material from the Alexandrian Book of Shadows. Today the tradition has evolved and contains of a mixture of Green Wicca, Celtic and Druidic practices as well as modern Witchcraft.

The Feri Tradition honors the Goddess and Her son, brother and lover (The Divine Twins) as the primary creative forces in the universe. The Gods are seen as real spirit beings like ourselves, and not merely aspects of our psyche. The tradition is an ecstatic tradition, rather than a fertility tradition with emphasis on polytheism, practical magic, self-development and theurgy. Strong emphasis is also placed on sensual experience and awareness, including sexual mysticism, which is not limited to heterosexual expression.

Initially small and secretive, many of the fundamentals of the tradition have now reached a larger audience, mainly through the writings of Starhawk, one of the tradition’s most famous initiate. Some secret branches of the tradition remain, but while only a few hundred initiates can trace their lineage directly back to Victor Anderson; many thousands are estimated to practice neo-Feri Traditions.

Gardnerian Wiccan

After the repeal of England’s last antiquated witchcraft laws in 1951, there began a resurgence of interest in the old religion, and witchcraft in particular. Gerald Brosseau Gardner, who later that year became director of the newly opened “Museum of Magic and Witchcraft” in Castletown, Isle of Man, spearheaded this resurgence. Gardner started to establish covens, using the basic ideas and rituals he had written about in his fictional book “High Magic’s Aid”, published in 1949.

In 1953 Gardner initiated into his coven Doreen Valiente. It was Doreen who helped Gardner reshape the structure of his covens, by re-writing and embellishing his “Book of Shadows”, thus establishing a new tradition and calling it Gardnerian Wicca. Both Gardner and Doreen were greatly influenced by the teachings of Charles Godfrey Leland, and in time the tradition took on elements of Italian Witchcraft. The famous “Charge of the Goddess” written by Doreen, was clearly inspired by his work.

Other aspects of the tradition influenced by Leland’s view of Italian Witchcraft are, The full moon gatherings, The worship of the goddess and god consort, The cakes and wine rituals and celebrations, and Ritual nudity.

Today the tradition is mainly coven based, and follows an extremely traditional path with a hierarchical grade structure unsuitable for solitary practice. The Gardnerian covens of today still adhere to the old time values of secrecy, and new initiates are pledged to take oaths upon initiation.

Hereditary Witchcraft

This refers to those people that can trace Craft practice back on their family tree in an unbroken family tradition passed down through the generations by their ancestors from the ancient Pagan Mysteries, and were taught the secrets of the Craft by a living relative (my mother’s grandmother’s sister’s cousin was a Witch, doesn't count). Many Hereditary Witches do not consider their traditions Wiccan, and some admit that they only use the term Wicca because of what they had read about Gardnerian beliefs and practices, which seemed to fit more or less closely with their own beliefs and practices. Hereditary traditions are also often referred to as FamTrad, or Family Traditionalists i.e. a Tradition that has passed down within the family and hence by hereditary descent.

Kitchen Witch (Hedge Witch)

The traditional British Witch, a Kitchen Witch is a person that practices from home by hearth and concentrates on the practical side of religion, magick, earth mysteries and the elements. Normally he or she is a solitary practitioner and does not belong to a coven or particular tradition, relying instead on self-study, personal discernment, and intuition. In many ways the Kitchen Witch is akin to the old village Witch who lived a solitary life but was called upon for spells and healing potions by the local folk.

The Kitchen Witch commonly works with a familiar spirit, and incorporates the use of herbs, trance, and shamanic techniques such as drumming to induce altered states of consciousness. It’s a more convenient form of practice for those who have limited space and resources like today’s suburban and busy professional city witches. Their focus is on practicality, the use of magick in the home and in the workplace with convenient rituals that include readily available ingredients available at short notice, and on a tight budget. The Kitchen Witch is usually very involved with working for the ecology of the planet, and tries to use only natural objects and materials for ritual and magical purposes.

Nordic Paganism

Nordic Paganism includes those traditions that worship the Norse pantheon of deities and stress conservative values of honour, honesty, courage and duty to one’s family, kith and kin. In the 1970’s a number of Norse Pagan groups sprang into existence almost simultaneously and independently of one another in America, England and Iceland. Many adherents to Norse Paganism are attracted by the emphasis on blood ties and genetics, the warrior ethic and Norse symbology. Norse Pagans recognize both branches of the Norse pantheon, the Aesir (e.g. Odin, Thor, Tiu and Balder) and the Vanir (e.g. Njord, Frey, and Freya).

Norse festivals centre on the seasonal equinoxes and solstices, and holidays such as Ragnar’s Day. Heavier emphasis is placed on skill mastery and shamanism than on magick and meditation. There are a few extreme right-wing Norse Pagan groups who believe they have founded a religion upon the Aryan race; and while some do include neo-Nazis, most Norse Pagans consider these people a fringe element not connected to their religion. Norse traditions are also known as Teutonic traditions.

The Pagan Federation (UK) is the leading organization supporting Paganism in the U.K., and founded in 1971 to provide information on Paganism by countering the many misconceptions about the religion. The Federation works for the rights of Pagans to worship freely without censure as decreed in “Article 18” of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states:

“Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public and in private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance”.

The Pagan Federation publishes a quarterly magazine called the “Pagan Dawn”, formerly known as “The Wiccan”, an influential periodical founded in 1968 by one of the Federations founding members, the late “John Score”. Under his guidance in the late 60’s, the Wiccan rose to prominence in both Britain and the United States as one of the worlds leading journals on Paganism. In collaboration with groups from Britain and the US, Score then played a key role in the formation of the “Pagan Way” in America, and in 1971 its counter part in Britain the “Pagan Front”. The Pagan Front however, evolved separately from the Pagan Way, and eventually changed its name to the Pagan Federation. The Wiccan remained the means of dissemination for the Pagan Front/Federation, before changing its name to the Pagan Dawn.

Through-out the year, the Pagan Federation sponsors and arranges private (members-only) meetings, as well as public orientated events up and down the country. The highlight of these events is the Annual Conference held normally in November, which attracts an international gathering. The aim of the Federation is to provide information and contact between Pagan groups and genuine seekers of the Old Religion. To promote contact and dialogue between the various branches of Paganism in Britain and Europe, as well as other Pagan organizations world-wide, and to provide practical support and effective information to members of the public, the media, public bodies and government administrations.

The Three Principles of the Pagan Federation are:

Love for and Kinship with Nature. Reverence for the life force and its ever-renewing cycles of life and death.

The Pagan Ethic: “If it harms none, do what thou wilt”. This is a positive morality expressing the belief in individual responsibility for discovering one's own true nature and developing it fully, in harmony with the outer world and community.

Recognition of the Divine, which transcends gender by acknowledging both the female and male aspect of Deity.

Membership to the Federation is restricted to persons over the age of 18 years, who agree with the above Three Principles.

Shamanism

Shamanism is a religion that blends Witchcraft with the magical beliefs of African and Native American tribal societies. Rituals and practices are designed to connect individuals to the divine through contact with the spirit world. Through communication with the spirits, the Shaman can work acts of healing, divination, and magic - revealing by way of vision, poetry, and myth the deeper reaches of the human spirit.

According to archaeological and ethnological evidence, shamanism has been practiced for some 20,000 to 30,000 years. It has been found all over the world including remote parts of the Americas, Siberia, Asia, Australia, Northern Europe and Africa. Selena Fox founded the modern Wiccan style of shamanism under the banner of Circle Sanctuary, which is an interfaith blend of Wicca made up from cross-cultural shamanic practices and transpersonal psychology.

To achieve or induce the required mental state of consciousness to perform his or her work, drumming, chanting, and the use of rattles are normally employed. However shamanism is also one of the few Wicca traditions to accept and permit the use of hallucinogens to achieve this altered state. Once achieved the primary focus of the shaman is to heal mentally, emotionally, and physically. To do this the shaman must first have acquired a guardian spirit, the source of his spiritual power. Guardian spirits may appear to the shaman in differing guises such as power animals, tutelary spirits, totemic animals, or familiars.

The most common method of discovering and connecting with the guardian spirit is a solitary all night vigil outside, preferably in some quiet remote place. The guardian spirit will usually manifest itself as an animal, bird, fish, or reptile, but can also appear in human form. It is both beneficent and beneficial and will bring to the shaman the power of an entire species. Once it has appeared the shaman invites the spirit into his own body where it protects him from illness and unfriendly forces while he or she is in an altered state. Healing, divination and other works of magic can now be performed.

Pagan and Wiccan shamanism fosters a close connection with earth issues, and plays a leading role in the environmental and ecological interests of many individuals. It also plays a significant role in the creation of alternative healing therapies especially tailored to Pagan and Wiccan spirituality.

Solitary

Solitary practitioners are individuals preferring to work in private rather than within the confines of a group or coven. Some practice and study a particular single tradition, while others, like the Eclectic Wiccan pick, choose and blend different traditions. Wicca with its diverse number of traditions works well with this sort of practice, and Solitary working can be as fulfilling as working in a group setting. Because of its solitary nature and without clear guidance, it does involve a deal of self-study and determination to achieve results. Solitary Wiccans often undertake a ritual of self-initiation to dedicate themselves to the Goddess and God.

Stonehenge

Stonehenge is one of the most famous megalithic monuments in the world and may once have been an observatory for predicting important astronomical events. Stonehenge is located in the English county of Wiltshire, about 2.0 miles west of Amesbury and 8 miles north of Salisbury.

Stonehenge is a strange and powerful magnet, attracting people of all kinds, from all across the world to view and sense the mystical and magical aura of its huge and ancient stones. Many people of all faiths and religious denomination now make it an annual pilgrimage, particularly during the summer solstice. Yet the original purpose of Stonehenge is still an enigma, one that even the best brains in the world have failed to unravel. Lord Byron in his poem 'Don Juan' echoed one of the questions many have sought to answer: “The Druid's groves are gone - so much the better. Stonehenge is not, but what the devil is it?”

The Saxons called the group of stones 'Stonehenge' or the 'Hanging Stones', while medieval writers refer to it as the 'Giant's Dance'. Inigo Jones the renowned 17th-century architect and the first to make a serious study of it, considered Stonehenge to be a Roman temple. Then William Stukeley an 18th-century antiquary and freemason convinced many that Stonehenge was once a ‘Temple of the British Druids’. Only in the 20th century have archaeologists established the true age of the monument and arrived at a more realistic conclusion as to its purpose.

The open Wiltshire countryside surrounding Stonehenge lies in the heart of southern England and is rich in prehistoric remains, these include: Woodhenge (a henge or enclosure once consisting of great wooden posts), Durrington Walls (once a structure similar to that in Avebury) and the Cursus (a pair of banked ditches 100 m (300 ft) apart and running straight for about 3 km (2 miles), they are believed to be dated around the 4th millennium BC). Then there are some 400 barrows, a lying testament to the intense communal activity of our ancient ancestors, those who grazed animals and cattle, grew wheat and other crops while at the same time worshiping their gods in and around Salisbury Plain. The purposes of some of these sites are still unknown, but many believe them to have been religious. Then in around 3500 BC they started to build Stonehenge.

Configuration

The stones of Stonehenge are surrounded by a large circular ditch measuring 104 m (340 ft) in diameter and 1.5 m (5 ft) deep, within the ditch is a bank and a ring of 56 pits or holes, now known as Aubrey holes, after their discoverer the British biographer and antiquarian John Aubrey (1626 –1697). At the northeast end of the circle a break gives access to a ditch-bordered avenue, this travels in a northeastwardly direction toward the East Avon River and measures 23 m (75 ft) wide and nearly 3 km (2 mile) long.

The monument itself consists of four arrangements of its stones. The outermost range is a circle 30 m (100 ft) in diameter containing large linteled sandstone blocks called sarsen stones. Inside this outer ring is a circle of smaller blue stones, consisting mainly of spotted dolerite with four specimens each of rhyolite and volcanic ash. This inner circle encloses a horseshoe-shaped arrangement of five linteled pairs of large sarsen stones and within this a smaller horseshoe-shaped arrangement of blue stones encloses a slab of green micaceous sandstone known as the ‘Altar Stone’. Near the entrance to the avenue lies another stone called the ‘Heel stone’, this again is of sarsen stone and may originally have stood upright.

Grouped around the main structure of the monument are a number of barrows, some of which contain chips of blue stone similar to those that make up the inner ring. These blue stones were brought down from the north flank of the Prescelly Mountains in Wales, while the Altar Stone is believed to have come from a region near Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire.

Construction

British archaeologists and notably Richard Atkinson established in the 1950s that the building of Stonehenge was constructed in three phases over about 1500 years. The first stage was the circular bank and ditch containing the Aubrey holes, at which time the first of the standing stone was erected outside the single entrance to the circle.

The second stage began some 200 or more years later. New builders constructed the avenue of parallel banks linking Stonehenge with the East Avon River about 3km (2 miles) away. It was during this phase that they brought down blocks of bluestone from the north flank of the Prescelly Mountains in Wales, a massive undertaking in those times. These large stones are thought to have been carried by raft around the coast of Wales to Bristol, then transported up local rivers and hauled overland until finally being dragged on rollers up the avenue to Stonehenge, there they were erected forming two circles.

However, the bluestone circles were soon dismantled and replaced by the giant stones that still dominate the site today. Since some of these stones measure 5.5 by 2 m (18ft by 7 ft) and weigh in at around 26 tons, their manipulation and erection must have involved a very large workforce. The men responsible for erecting them were obviously skilled craftsmen, for they shaped the stones making them slightly convex, carefully they fitted them into place with lintels covering each of the two vertical stones by use of ball and socket joints. Called trilithons because three stones were fitted together, they were erected in the circle and horseshoe shape still visible today.

The dismantled bluestones were later re-erected inside the circle of megaliths and can be seen as the small pillar stones dwarfed by the trilithons. Holes were dug outside the main circle for the erection of a double circle of bluestones, but for some reason this construction was never started. Some 1500 years after the beginning of Stonehenge the final changes took place. The bluestones were dismantled yet again and re-erected in their present positions inside the circle. At the same time, the stone now known as the Altar Stone, a large block of green sandstone from Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire, was set up in front of one of the trilithons.

What was Stonehenge's purpose?

The elaborate planning and workmanship as well as the many thousands of man-hours that went into its construction, demonstrates how important Stonehenge was to the peoples of its time. The fact that the architects needed the blue and green stones from Wales and the trouble they went to too get them, suggests that the stones themselves had special significance. It is evident then that Stonehenge was not designed to be a simple meeting place for the local people. But what was it designed for? What was its purpose? Today we can only speculate on a few tantalizing clues that point to its possible function.

The cremation burials discovered in the Aubrey Holes, show that funerary rites were once performed at Stonehenge, so could it be that during the mid-summer solstice as the sun rose between the Heel Stone and another stone no longer present, that the earliest Stonehenge was used to expose ancestral remains to the life-giving sun at this significant time of year, and that the Aubrey holes symbolized places of entry into the Underworld?

In more recent times American astronomer Gerald Hawkins used a computer to decode many of the stone alignments and from this concluded that Stonehenge was a sophisticated means of observing the heavens. But it is doubtful if these early observations were precise, or that the ancients were engaged in the same quest of discovery as scientists are today. Their most likely concerns would have been to establish a basic calendar and to chart the movements of the heavenly bodies for religious purposes.

The builders who constructed Stonehenge were not primitive people living the lives of country peasants. Even though they left no written record, it is almost certain they had remarkable knowledge and skills. As no one has yet has determined Stonehenge's true function, it may well be that John Michell, the British author and esoteric researcher is right when he suggested that: “Stonehenge was a cosmic temple dedicated to all twelve gods of the zodiac. It represents the ideal cosmology, the perfect and complete image of the universe”.

Stonehenge today

What remains of Stonehenge today is but a shadow of its past, though still an impressive view of its former glory. The original shape of the temple (if that’s what it was) can be discerned, though more than half the stones have either fallen, gone missing or been buried beneath the turf. Had an aerial photo of the monument been taken some 4,000 years ago, the 'Giant's Dance' would have been complete showing the four stone arrangements from the outside to the centre, the ring of sarsen sandstone monoliths linked by lintels and standing some 5m (16ft) tall, the circle of bluestones, the horseshoe of five sarsen trilithons and a horseshoe of bluestones, in the middle of which lay the great Altar Stone itself. To the northeast and outside the entrance would have stood the bulky Heel Stone guarding the avenue to this sacred site.

The size of the monument, the origin of the stones, the orientation of the site (from northeast to southwest), the man-hours of construction time and the centuries over which it was built, all point to Stonehenge being more than a peasant farmers meeting place. While most archaeologists now agree to a religious function, anyone who has witnessed the sunrise over the great sarsen stones at the time of the midwinter solstice can hardly doubt the additional astronomical function of Stonehenge.

Although the mystical temple of Stonehenge was abandoned around 3,000 years ago, much of it has survived and its magic has never disappeared. Merlin the magician was credited with erecting the stones, while local people have long believed the stones had healing powers which, when transferred to water, could cure all manner of ailments. Rural gatherings have been held here for centuries and for the last 80 years, white-robed descendants of the United Ancient Order of Druids (founded by freemasons in London in 1833), have performed ritual passed down through oral tradition. At dawn on the morning of the summer solstice, these latter-day Druids play harps and trumpets, saluted the Heel Stone and the sarsen stones, intoned murmuring chants and raised oak leaves or incense into the air. These modern Druids though, have no connection with the original Celtic priesthood that once celebrated the summer solstice at Stonehenge.

However, in the past the site have taken it toll, and has weathered and endured the weight of many people. Sadly some have even abused the site by climbing the stones and painting them with graffiti. Happily today, much of this damage has been erased by the elements. As a precaution against further damage, in 1989, much to the consternation of many, the authorities banned both the Druids and the festival for fear that the stones and the surrounding land would be damaged by the pressure of so many feet walking among the stones, the effect of which was pounding the grass into dust.

This caused much discontent amongst the populace, for at this time Stonehenge was also the spiritual focus of many ‘New Age’ religions and peoples of a nomadic way of life. Throughout the late 1980’s and early 1900’s, conflicts and riots ensued over who should have access to the stones, and on several consecutive mid-summer occasions many had to be forcibly kept from access by the police. Fencing now encircles the site throughout the year, simply to protect it from vandalism.

Happily this conflict has now been resolved, and while access to the stones throughout the year is still prohibited, except by special approval, annually on the summer solstice, four hours before dawn until four hours after, all barriers are taken down and free access is allowed to all who wish to celebrate and worship.

While the conflict of access may have been resolved, still the most glaring intrusion of Stonehenge remains. These are the two roads that now appear to dissect the landscape, one of which is so close that it appears to touch one of the stones and is separated only by a chain-link fence. The other passes a little farther away, some 200 yards from the site. However, hope is in the offing, interested archaeologists and historians want more than protection of the site, they also want the experience of Stonehenge to be enhanced. A new 'Stonehenge Master Plan' has been proposed involving all associated interested groups, English Heritage included. This plan is to ensure that the landscape will be returned to its original grandeur by changing roadways, restoring landscapes and improving visitor facilities to the site.

Buddha Statues come in a wide variety of different positions/poses, the most common is the Buddha sitting in the Lotus Position. This is the position of meditation and it symbolizes perfect balance of thought and tranquillity. The hand positions are called mudra, the fingers of the right hand is resting on the fingers of the left which lay in the lap of the Buddha. The legs are crossed in what is called the Lotus Position. The left foot is placed on the right thigh and the right foot is placed on the left thigh. Majority of Buddha statues sit on a pedestal in the form of a lotus blossom. The lotus represents the Buddha’s mind. The laughing Buddha statue is a symbol of happiness and contentment. The Laughing Buddha is seen in different postures, each having a different meaning.

Nearly every Buddha image is made in one of these postures which one can easily be identified by the position of the hands. Each of these positions can be associated with a moment in the Buddha’s life that has an important lesson.

Dispelling Fear

The Buddha hand is raised with the palm facing outwards and fingers extended in a universal gesture of protection, benevolence, and peace.
Teaching The Buddha hand is raised with the palm facing outwards and index finger forming a circle with the thumb.

Meditation Buddha

Both the Buddha hands are resting together on the lap. This gesture represents the perfect balance of thought and tranquillity.

Calling the Earth to Witness Buddha

With both palms inwards, the right hand of the Buddha touches the ground and “calls the earth to witness” the Buddha’s enlightenment. This gesture represents the unshakable faith and resolution and is the most common posture.

Protection Buddha

Signifies courage, offers protection from fear, delusion and anger. Right hand raised, facing outward, left hand resting in lap, Seated with ankles tucked (Double Lotus), or one leg resting on top of the other (Single Lotus)

Meditation Buddha

Signifies inner wisdom, emotional balance, and clarity. Both hands resting face up in the lap, one hand on top of the other. Seated with ankles tucked (Double Lotus), or one leg resting on top of the other (Single Lotus)

Enlightenment Buddha

Signifies insight, purity of character, self-mastery. Right hand facing downward with fingers extended toward the ground, palm facing inward. Seated with ankles tucked (Double Lotus)

Teaching Buddha

Signifies wisdom, understanding, and fulfilling destiny. Both hands at chest level, with thumb and index fingers forming a circle, right hand palm in, left hand palm out

Medicine Buddha

Safe Travels Buddha

The Safe Travels Buddha is an old-fashioned rendition. He either carries a stick with a bundle tied to the end of it or he has a sack thrown over one shoulder. Both variations include him holding a wealth ball in his other hand.

Long Life Buddha

The Long Life Buddha is seated and has a bag of blessings by his side or holds the bag in his lap. In one hand, he cradles a wealth ball raised in front of him and a Ru-Yi pot in his other hand.

Spiritual Journey Buddha

The Spiritual Journey Buddha has quite a few symbols to study. Typically, he carries a gourd of enlightenment suspended from a stick while holding a fan in his other hand. He wears a necklace made of prayer beads.

Happy Home Buddha

The Happy Home Buddha is seated and holds a parasol over his shoulder, protruding behind his back.

Love Buddha

Combinations of symbols create a seated Love Buddha holding a wealth ball in one hand with a bag slung over his shoulder.

Earth Buddha

Also known as, Calling Earth to Witness, the Earth Buddha sits on the ground with his right hand extended so his fingers point to the earth beneath him. This statue honours the time when Buddha was repeatedly tempted by the demon, Mara, but resisted and reached enlightenment.

Reclining Buddha

Buddha awaits his transition from this life to death, which he viewed as a mere journey of transition into a different state of being.

Contemplation Buddha

Signifies determination and patient understanding. Both arms lie flat against the chest, palms in, with right arm on outside of left arm. Standing with legs together

This is the posture of bestowing a blessing on mankind. If there is a bowl filled with a plant resting in the left hand of the Buddha, then it is a statue of the medicine Buddha. This particular statue is from Tibetan Buddhism, as they believe that the knowledge of medicine was a gift from the Buddha to mankind.

Right Hand Making a Circle

This is the Mudra for perfection, or the argument of perfection, by the Buddha.

Jewelled Eggs

Items needed

plastic egg
assorted costume jewels and gold beads - I used two long earrings in the example shown, plus parts of two broken necklaces
gold spray paint or gold acrylic craft paint
two ribbon roses thin gold braid
gold or silver rick rack or ribbon
pencil
hot glue gun and glue sticks

Instructions:
Open the egg and paint gold, either with gold acrylic paint or gold spray paint. If you have problems getting the paint to stick to the plastic, use a primer first before painting. When dry, put both ends back together.
Using the hot glue, glue the egg to an egg stand. A broken wine glass stem was used here, but other types of egg stands are available. You could try making a matching gold stand out of recycled materials - spraying painting a jar top for the base, and a piece of dowel for the stand. Use your imagination here - it's fun to be creative!
Begin decorating the egg by hot gluing the gold or silver rick rack (or ribbon) over the centre join. Don't worry about those pesky little glue strings that form as you work - once dry they are easy to remove.

Use the pencil to lightly sketch a line all around the egg, where you want the outer circle of jewels to go. Experiment with the jewels to find the look you want. You can glue this outer circle of jewels in place one by one, or use a string of jewels - perhaps cut from an old necklace or, alternatively, strung together by you.
Glue the outer circle of jewels in place with hot glue, beginning where the egg meets the egg stand and continuing all around. It helps to do one quarter at time, as this allows you time to place the jewels before the hot glue hardens.

Choose a special stone for the centrepiece of your jewelled egg and glue it in place. In this case, it is a shiny red "ruby".
Flank the centrepiece stone by two ribbon roses. These are optional - you could use two more dramatic looking stones, if you like.
Place a line of gold beads vertically from where the egg joins the stem upwards. Here the line ends at the three quarter mark, but it could be extended to the top
At the top centre, glue on a stone in its own setting (another contribution from a broken necklace), or simply use a large stone for dramatic effect.

Glue two lines of jewels from the centre stone, going diagonally to the top. You can see the two lines in the this example are actually long narrow earring drops of pearls and gold beads.
Optionally, you can frame the outer circle of stones by gluing on thin gold braid, as shown. Begin where the egg meets the stand and continue all around.
At the back of the egg, reinforce the join of the egg and wine glass (or dowel) by applying a fairly thick line of hot glue.

Beltane Garland

Sprigs of greenery (rosemary, myrtle, bay leaves etc)
Variety of fresh or dried flowers
Ribbons, beads, crystals etc (optional)
Floral wire
Wire cutters
Scissors
Hot Glue Gun

Depending on the weight of your garland will decide the gauge of wire required i.e. evergreens will need a thinker wire to support its weight. Myrtle for May is very appropriate and it is lightweight. Fresh flowers can be kept alive with regular spritzing or floral water tubes.
Assemble your flowers by wrapping the stems tightly together with floral wire. Make as many as you desire to be scattered around the garland.

Wire flower clumps to sprigs of greenery either on the main stem or to other stem parts.
Now use a continuous wire, unwinding the spool as you work. Start overlapping one sprig onto another and wire together on the thickest stem parts. Try to cover the wire wrap with greenery. Continue to wire together until the size you want
Now add the ribbons, bells, beads, baubles, crystals etc
Now string the garland over the doorway or where ever you want it to go

Beltane Wreath

All of the Greenery goes on first. Weave, wrap, or tuck into the grapevine. Glue it in places if necessary. Use fresh or dried. Moss will tuck into the grapevine easily.

Place a variety of different flowers loosely around the greenery to arrange them before gluing them into place.

After all the flowers are in place, you can add your ribbons, and raffia, beads or crystals.... what ever you would like. Place your figurine in if desired. And there you have your May Wreath complete with May Doll

Maypole centerpiece

You will need:

18" wooden dowel

6 - 9" diameter flat round plaque

Small grapevine wreath decorated on each side

1 yard each of red and white ribbon

Scissors

Drill and ¼ inch drill bit

1 x 1¼" flathead screw (you will need to adjust length in accordance to thickness of plaque to enable dowel to be fixed securely to plaque)

Hot glue gun

Drill pilot holes through plaque and ½" deep into dowel.

Cross the ribbons and attach them to the top of the dowel with the hot glue.

Attach the dowel to the plaque by screwing through the bottom of the plaque and into the dowel.

Glue the wreath to the top of the ribbons on the dowel

Braid the ribbon, one colour going left and the other right. Braid about 2" down and glue into place.

If you wish you can add a small figurine or bird into the wreath

Beltane Jingle Bells

Orange Honey Butter

Savoury Cheese Scones

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Combine all dry ingredients,
stir in cheeses and toss well. Cut in butter. Combine eggs and

diameter, 1/2" thick circle. Cut into wedges, place wedges on a
baking sheet and bake 15 to 17 minutes, until lightly browned.

Irish Oatcakes

Mix flour and salt together. Slowly add warm water. Roll out on a floured board to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into triangles. Cook on a pan or griddle until golden on both sides. Dry out in a cool oven (300 degrees) until crisp. These cakes are eaten
buttered, with a glass of milk, for supper, but are also terrific
with wine and cheese.

2 Sticks cinnamon
Juice and peel from one lemon
1 teaspoon Activated dry yeast

In a large nonreactive pot, add the ingredients a part from the yeast to the water. Boil all together for 30 minutes, then strain into a bowl that will hold it with a little room to spare. When cooled, add the yeast, dissolved in some of the liquid. Allow to
ferment in a cool place - 55 degrees is ideal - until it ceases
bubbling and the liquor clears, then bottle, cap tightly and
store in a cool, dark cellar. It should not be used for at least a
month, and longer is better.

This Meade, unlike many other drinks, does not improve with really long aging, so it should be consumed within a year of the time it was made.

May Wine

1/2 cup Fresh Strawberries, sliced
12 sprigs of fresh woodruff

Pour wine into carafe or wide mouth bottle. Add strawberries and woodruff and allow to blend for at least an hour. Strain and serve well chilled.

Garnish with thin orange slices. The strawberries add a wonderful flavour and the woodruff adds sweetness.

Asparagus with Chives and Blossoms

1 pound Asparagus, washed
1 Tablespoon Olive oil
1 Tablespoon Sesame Seeds
2 Tablespoons Fresh Chives, snipped
16 Chive Blossoms
1/2 teaspoon Soy Sauce
Salt and Pepper to taste

Blanch the asparagus in lightly salted boiling water for about 3 minutes or until crisp-tender; do not overcook. Refresh under very cold water and drain well. Remove the chive stalks to separate the flowers. In a skillet, heat the oil over medium heat
and add the sesame seed. Stir for 1 minute, add the snipped chives, and stir for 1 minute more.

Add the asparagus and soy sauce to the skillet with a few pinches of salt and generous
grindings of pepper; stir well, cover, and cook for a minute or so. Remove the lid, sprinkle the chive blooms over the asparagus, and cover for 1 to 2 minutes so that the chive blooms steam briefly. Stir lightly and taste for seasoning.Serve hot.

Comments:

Bright lavender chive blossoms begin to bloom in the garden about the time the asparagus bed is at its peak. Hence, this is a natural combination and a simply tasty dish. Since chive blossoms are so strong in flavour, add them at the last minute in this recipe.

Apple Dumplings

of dough; fill with cinnamon and sugar; wet edges of dough and fold over apple. Place on greased baking sheet, and bake at 350-F until apples are tender (about 40 minutes).

Hot Spiced Punch

2 pints of cranberry juice
8 ounces brown sugar
3 - 2" sticks of cinnamon
1 Tablespoon of whole cloves

Put the cloves in a cloth bag. Boil in 2 cups of water. Let cool.
Pour clove water and juices into large container. Mix well.
Pour into large kettle and bring to a boil. Serve hot in cups or
mugs.

Hallowmass Cakes

4 fluid ounces vegetable oil
4 ounces unsweetened baking chocolate, melted
8 ounces granulated sugar
4 eggs
2 teaspoon vanilla
16 ounces self raising flour, sifted
2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
8 ounces icing sugar

In a mixing bowl, combine vegetable oil, chocolate, and granulated sugar. Blend in eggs, one at a time, stirring well after each addition. Add vanilla. Stir in flour, baking powder,and salt into oil mixture. Chill for several hours or overnight.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F Roll about a Tablespoon of dough into a ball. Drop balls into icing sugar, and roll until coated. Place balls about 2 inches apart on a greased baking sheet. Bake for 10-12 min. The cakes should be a soft and the edges should be firm. Do not over bake; they burn easily. Makes about 3 dozen

Irish Apple Fritters

5 fluid ounces Water
1/4 teaspoon Salt
2 each Eggs (separated)
1 tablespoon Melted butter
2 each Large cooking apples
4 ounces Sugar Lemon juice
Oil for deep frying

Make batter at least an hour before required, using following method. Sift together flour and salt. Make a well in the centre.
Add the cooled melted butter and some of the water and egg yolks. Work in the flour and beat until smooth. Add remaining water. Leave to stand. Just before using, beat the egg whites until stiff but not dry. Fold into batter mix. Peel, core and slice apples (slices about 1/4-1/2 inch thick). Dip into batter and deep fry in very hot oil (175-180C) until golden. Drain and serve dredged with sugar and sprinkled with lemon juice.

The branches of Wicca

Wicca is one of the oldest existing religions. It dates back to 50,000BC. It was not until the late 1950’s that witchcraft was legalized in England it was the 1960’s that it was legalized in North America. The foundations of Wicca are such. An it harm none do what thy wilt. Meaning, if no one gets hurt in the process, go ahead and live your life. Wiccans do not believe in heaven or hell. They believe in the morals that are contained within them. A Wiccan would never murder or rape or steal, as they would find it morally irremissible. Wicca, also known as Witchcraft, is a form of Paganism and one of the oldest religions in the world. The benevolent nature-oriented practices of Wicca date back many thousands of years. The word pagan comes from the Latin ‘paganus’ literally meaning ‘peasants.’ Paganism was simply the ‘religion of the people’.

Wicca is a Neopagan religion found in many different countries, though most commonly in English-speaking cultures. Wicca was first publicized in 1954 by a British civil servant and Co-Freemason named Gerald Gardner after the British Witchcraft Act was repealed. He claimed that the religion, of which he was an initiate, was a modern survival of an old witch cult, which had existed in secret for hundreds of years, originating in the pre-Christian Paganism of Europe. Wicca is sometimes referred to as the Old Religion. The veracity of Gardner's claims cannot be independently proven, and it is thought that Wiccan theology began to be compiled no earlier than the 1920s. Various related Wiccan traditions have since evolved, or been adapted from, the form established by Gardner, which came to be called Gardnerian Wicca. These other traditions of Wicca each have specific beliefs, rituals, and practices. Most traditions of Wicca remain secretive and require members to be initiated. However, there is a growing movement of Eclectic or Solitary Wiccans who adhere to the religion but do not believe a traditional initiation is necessary.

The branches of Wicca

There are many different branches for Wicca possibly hundreds so I have listed a few more commoner ones.

Gardnerian Wicca

was founded by Gerald Gardner

Gerald Gardner was a British Civil Servant, in the 1950's after England repealed the laws making witchcraft illegal. This obviously opened the door for Gardner to become more open. Gardner initiated Doreen Valiente into his coven as well as Alex Sanders. With Doreen's help they reshaped and restructured the covens with a lot of influences by the teachings of Charles Godfrey Leland and in time took on similarities of Italian Witchcraft as well as creations of their own workings. This tradition is mainly coven based and follows an extremely traditional path with a hierarchical grade structure unsuitable for solitary practice. Today it still adheres to the old time values of secrecy and new initiates are pledge to take oath upon initiation.

In Gardnerian Wicca there are sexual over tones, they prefer to go skyclad during circle rituals...meaning to go nude. This tradition focuses on the God and goddess who are equally balanced and they do celebrate the 8 sabbats as well as esbats. Gardner considered the occult witchcraft practiced in England to be the remnants of ancient earth-based worship system and his wiccan tradition was his attempt to restore that ancient religious system. Gardnerian Wicca was brought to America around approximately 1963 with the help of Raymond Buckland. Today Wicca and other traditions are on the rise due to many different reasons. The Elders in this Country over the years have been fighting very hard to receive the same rights and laws as other
religions in America.

Alexandrian Wicca

Founded by Alex Sanders and his wife Maxine in the 1960's, the Alexandrian Tradition originated in England. Alex Sanders was often referred to as the “King of the Witches”, and with the help of his wife Maxine, they were instrumental in opening up Wicca to the general public. During the 1960’s and early 70’s, they were responsible for initiating many hundreds of newcomers into the craft, amongst whom where Stewart Farrar and Janet Owen. In the early days the original rituals of the tradition are thought to have been Gardnerian, plagiarized by Alex and embellished with a few of his own amendments. These he then used to found his own coven from which emerged the Alexandrian Tradition. Today although still similar to Gardnerian in terms of its hierarchical structure, the Alexandrian Tradition tends to be more eclectic and liberal, focusing strongly on ceremonial magick.

It is, of course, hard to quantify just what makes the essential "Alexandrian Tradition", as covens vary considerably, even within the same culture. I have yet to encounter two covens who work precisely the same way, even from the same line. Generally though, Alexandrian covens focus strongly upon training, which includes areas more generally associated with ceremonial magic, such as Qabalah, Angelic Magic, and Enochian. The typical Alexandrian coven has a hierarchical structure, and generally meets weekly, or at least on Full Moons, New Moons and Festivals.

Most Alexandrian covens will allow non-initiates to attend circles, usually as a "neophyte", who undergoes basic training in circle craft, and completes a number of projects, prior to being accepted by the coven for initiation to 1st degree. Some, though not all, Alexandrian covens will also welcome non-initiated "guests" at certain meetings. My own first experience of Wicca was as a guest of an Alexandrian coven.
Alexandrian Wicca uses essentially the same tools and rituals as Gardnerian Wicca, though in some cases, the tools are used differently, and the rituals have been adapted. Another frequent change is to be found in the names of deities and guardians of the quarters. In some ways these differences are merely cosmetic, but in others, there are fundamental differences in philosophy.

That said, over the last thirty years, the two traditions have moved slowly towards each other, and the differences which marked lines of demarcation are slowly fading away. Individual covens certainly continue to maintain different styles and working practices, but it is possible to speak today of "Wicca" encompassing both traditions.

Celtic Wiccan

Celtic witchcraft is Wicca with a Celtic twist. Rituals, legends, and deities come from Celtic lore and are often based on the Druidic tradition. They put heavy stress on elements, nature, and the Ancient Ones in their rituals. Celtic witches tend to be more knowledgeable about the properties of herbs, plants, stones, and trees, and use them often in their healing spells and rituals.

Though it is not officially attributed to a single individual, there seems to be a connection to Gavin and Yvonne Frost. This tradition is mostly focused on the male aspect of Wicca but has recently begun to emphasize on the goddess aspect as well as the Gods and goddesses of ancient Wales, Ireland, and Scotland, emphasizing a balance between the God and Goddess. Celtic Wiccans seek to be closely attuned to nature (Gaia). Therefore, they use herbalism and divination, revere women, seek a connection with the ancestors and land spirits. This tradition also emphasizes poetry in its magick,

The old Celtic religious system was polytheistic and nature based with focus on meditation. It uses three concentric circles of salt, sulphur, and herbs. It is also known as Baptist Wicca.

Dianic witchcraft is considered to be a branch of feminist Wicca. The covens usually consist of women, and they honour the goddess of the Moon and hunt, Diana (who is also known as the Greek goddess Artemis). These covens generally focus their energy on the Goddess as the ultimate creator. Some Dianics identify themselves as Wiccans, but most prefer to be called Witches or a priestess of the Goddess.

Dianic Wicca

is a relatively new phenomenon in relation to traditional witchcraft, though the goddess Diana has been revered since ancient times. Zsuzsanna Budapest of California founded the tradition in the United States during the 1960’s, and in the early 70’s was arrested and tried for her belief’s.

Druidic Witchcraft

Eclectic Wicca

An eclectic Wiccan as the term implies doesn't follow any strict traditional guidelines, instead they practice the beliefs that suit them best. They often mix traditions to find that which most suits their own stance on religion or belief’s. They practice whatever magick they consider obtains best results, and study those parts of any religion that best suit their lifestyles. This is mostly of modern origin; previously most Wiccan traditions had more restricting boundaries. The eclectic tradition marks witchcraft's expansion into a patchwork quilt of various beliefs and theories. Although this isn't exactly an "official" tradition there are many Wiccans that call themselves Eclectic, in fact most solitary Wiccans consider themselves eclectic. What this means is that they have combined elements from several different traditions into one they feel comfortable with. Many of the newer traditions started out as Eclectic.

Faery Wicca

Also referred to as the fae, fey, feri, faerie, fairy, and fairie tradition. Founded by Victor and Cora Anderson in the mid-late 1950’s, when they were inspired to form their own tradition after reading a book by Gerald B. Gardner “Witchcraft Today”. Anderson was responsible for writing most of the tradition’s rituals, which he initially based on fairy folklore and beliefs, he is still universally recognized as the Grand Master of the Faery Tradition. In 1959, Victor initiated the late Gwydion Pendderwen, who then aged 13, would later become a leading voice in the Faery Tradition.

An old African priestess initiated Victor Anderson into Witchcraft in 1926, they practiced a form of Witchcraft with Huna and African influences, and which was primarily Dahomean-Haitian. Anderson is now one of the last genuine Kahuna. Some of these earlier influences he incorporated into the new Faery tradition. Pendderwen after visiting with an Alex Sanders coven in England, incorporated material from the Alexandrian Book of Shadows. Today the tradition has evolved and contains of a mixture of Green Wicca, Celtic and Druidic practices, as well as modern Witchcraft.

The Faery Tradition honours the Goddess and Her son, brother and lover (The Divine Twins) as the primary creative forces in the universe. The Gods are seen as real spirit beings like ourselves, and not merely aspects of our psyche. The tradition is an ecstatic tradition, rather than a fertility tradition with emphasis on polytheism, practical magic, self-development and theurgy. Strong emphasis is also placed on sensual experience and awareness, including sexual mysticism, which is not limited to heterosexual expression.

This is a mystery tradition of power, mystery, danger, ecstasy, and direct communication with divinity. Most initiates are in the arts and incorporate their own poetry, music and invocations into rituals. The Tradition is gender-equal, and all sexual orientations seem able to find a niche. According to Francesca De Grandis, founder of the 3rd Road branch: “Faerie power is not about a liturgy but about one's body: a Fey shaman's blood and bones are made of stars and Faerie dust. A legitimate branch of Faerie is about a personal vision that is the Fey Folks' gift to a shaman”. Initially small and secretive, many of the fundamentals of the tradition have reached a large audience, mainly through the writings of Starhawk, the tradition’s most famous initiate. Some secret branches of the tradition remain but while only a few hundred initiates can trace their lineage directly back to Victor Anderson; many thousands are estimated to practice neo-Faery Traditions.

Kitchen Witch (Hedge Witch)

The Kitchen Witch is usually very involved with working for the ecology of the planet, and tries to use only natural objects and materials for ritual and magick purposes

Sacred Trees

Oak Trees
Considered by many to be a magical tree. Devotees of the Phoenician God Baal made sacrificial offerings under the Oak. Socrates regarded the Oak as an Oracle tree. All Druid rites involved the use of an Oak tree. The Oak was also sacred to the Roman God Jupiter. In Scandinavia the Oak tree was dedicated to Thor.

Olive Trees
Very sacred to Greek Goddess Athena. Athena gave the Olive Tree the power to bear fruit. When Xerxes captured Acropolis he burned a mystical olive tree which reappeared by magic. A Dove also brought Noah a sprig of Olive tree to indicate it was safe to come out of the ark.

Laurel Trees
It was the Greek nymph Daphne that was being chased by Apollo who asked to be changed into another form. So Athena helped by transforming her into a Laurel tree. As such the Laurel tree became sacred to Apollo. The Laurel was said to give visionary powers and as such the Delphic Oracle used to chew the Laurel leaves to induce visionary powers. The Laurel was also hung on doorways to keep ghosts away.

Pine Tree

Elder Trees
In Scotland and Wales it was believed that the dwarf Elder on grew on ground which had been soaked in blood. Elder was not used in a Childs cradle as it was believed the would be harried by fairies. In Germany it was thought unlucky to brink an Elder branch into the house. Elder was also considered a protection against evil. During the horror times of the Catholic inquisition people carried Elder as a protection against the church. Elder was also believed to protect gardens. It was thought very unlucky to break or cut an Elder branch. Gardeners had to ask permission from the tree first. It was unlucky to burn Elder wood. This stems from the fact that the church often used Elder in burning people.

Elm Trees
In England the Elm tree was associated with elves. It was also believed that the falling of leaves of the Elm out of season predicted disease among cattle. The Elm was also used to cure cattle by means of the "Need fire". Elm leaves have also been used for centuries for medicinal purposes. Herbalists still use Slippery Elm.

Soma
Was a sacred plant that was used to make a drink that was consumed in Vedic sacrificial rites in honour of the God Indra. Soma was believed to be the drink of the Gods. It was thought to bestow divinity upon mortals. Some people believe Soma was in fact the leafless plant, Sarcostemma Acidum.

Myrtle
An evergreen plant that is associated with love and marriage. Ancient Egyptians consecrated it to Hathor. In Ancient Greece it was sacred to Aphrodite. In ancient Rome brides wore wreaths of myrtle blossom on their wedding day.

Mistletoe
The Druid priests use to distribute Mistletoe to worshipers after a white bull had been sacrificed to the spirits. The Mistletoe was then taken home and hung from the ceiling to ward off evil forces. In ancient Rome it was used to protect against evil. The Romans also used it as a way to speak to ghosts. Modern day couples kiss underneath the mistletoe, a custom that goes back to the Celtic church.

Holly
Has been used down through time as a protection against evil. It was also hung around houses as a protection against lightning. Its use at Christmas may be traced back to ancient Rome were it was used during the festival to Saturn.

Amaranth
A flower which is a symbol of immortality. A crown made with this flower will bring fame and fortune to those who wear it. The Amaranth was also used to decorate images of Gods and tombs. The Amaranth was also sacred to the Goddess Artemis of Ephesus. The name Amaranth derives from Amarynthos, a hunter and King of Euboea.

Broceliande
Was a magic forest in ancient Brittany that figured in Arthurian legend. It was the place that Merlin was enchanted by Viviana, Lady of the Lake. The name Broceliande is often symbolic of the dim unreality of legendary scenery. Paimpont forest, also known as Brocéliande, is in the French commune of Paimpont, near the city of Rennes in Brittany. As Brocéliande it had a reputation in the Medieval imagination as a place of magic and mystery. It is the setting of a number of adventures in Arthurian legend, notably Chrétien de Troyes's Yvain, the Knight of the Lion, and locals claim the tree in which the Lady of the Lake supposedly imprisoned Merlin can still be seen today. Other legendary places said to lie within the forest include the Val sans Retour, the tomb of Merlin, the Fountain of Youth, and Hotié de Vivianne (castle of the Lady of the Lake).

Baaras
Known to the Arabs as the golden plant. The plant grew on Mount Libanus. The Baaras flowers in the month of May after the snow melts. During daytime it is invisible, but at night it can be seen by torchlight. It was of great assistance to alchemists in the transmutation of metals. A marvelous plant known to the Arabs as the "Golden Plant," which is supposed to grow on Mount Libanus, under-neath the road that leads to Damascus.

Basically a near death experience happens when a person nearly dies or was clinically dead and then revived. It is during this that many people experience what may be referred to as an out of body experience. A near-death experience (NDE) refers to a broad range of personal experiences associated with impending death, encompassing multiple possible sensations ranging from detachment from the body, feelings of levitation, extreme fear, total serenity, security, or warmth, the experience of absolute dissolution, and the presence of a light, which some people interpret as a deity or spiritual presence. There are many different accounts of near death experiences reported from thousands of people. But there seems to be several recurrent themes. The general near death experience is as follows : Generally the person hears that they are being declared dead. For what ever reason this seems in some way to maybe be an important trigger. Sometimes they hear a noise that is unfamiliar and maybe makes them feel uncomfortable. They then find they are moving down a tunnel. This tunnel is either very bright or very dark. They then find themselves at the end of the tunnel and out of their body. They may be able to see their physical body. They are totally aware of activity going on around the physical body. Somewhere at this point they seem to be aware they are dead. At this point they are often joined by spirits which are usually long dead family, relatives or friends. Sometimes a spirit that is like a being of light will appear. The being of light will often show a sort of replay of the persons life. This is done in a non judgmental way. It is around this point that the being of light tells them that it is not yet their time and they must return. A moment later they find themselves back in their body. When they awake they will remember every detail of the experience. After the experience the person usually has a different view on life.

Tunnels in Near Death Experience
About half the people who experience a near death experience report seeing a tunnel. Of those about half report seeing a tunnel of light and the other half report seeing a tunnel of darkness. The tunnel of light is reported as being bright and golden. The tunnel of darkness is reported as a black void of nothingness. Unexpected near death experience are generally the result of an accident. In an unexpected near death experience there tends to be a flashback of your life. The flashback often appears in bright black and white. There are often feelings of peace and happiness. It also tends to involve a sudden and unexpected return to the body. People report being pulled or rushed back into their body with some speed and force.

Also sometimes called "Belemnites". They are found in many countries, but are very common in Scotland. Elf Arrows are small triangular flints. It was believed that these arrows were fatal to cattle. A silica mineral that is related to quartz. It is said that Chalcedony has both magical and medical properties. It was often used to protect against evil. Myths About Astral Travel
Astral travel has nothing to do with religion or magic. It really requires no paraphernalia or rituals of any type. In many ways astral travel is a controlled experiment. I believe that astral travel is in no way dangerous. There is no evidence that has been submitted to me to show that anyone has ever suffered any negative effects from astral travel under natural conditions. Astral Travel is safe and a great adventure.

How Common is Out Of Body
Research indicates that between 5 to 10 % of people have experienced an out of body experience. That amounts to as much as 30 million in the USA alone. A further 85% of those people indicated that had the experience while resting or trying to sleep. In some cases an out of body experience has occurred during high speed traveling. Both aircraft pilots and motor cycle riders have reported the experience. Some pilots reported finding themselves out of the plane trying to get back in. Yet at the same time being aware that still also in the plane and flying it. There are reported cases where the person has traveled a large distance to another place and even held a conversation which has been confirmed by those present.

Natural Astral Travel
There are a number of differences between deliberate and spontaneous astral travel.
People who experience spontaneous out of body report a body shape that is usually an exact double of their physical body.
People who experience deliberate out of body report a body shape that is altered at will.
People who experience deliberate out of body also report a type of joining to the body such as a silver cord.
There are also many similarities between the two.
Both experiences report an increased sense of energy and vitality.
A much higher sense of sight and hearing.
Strange sounds such as loud bangs.
An altered sense of vibration of the consciousness.
People who have experienced an out of body have a much stronger belief in life after death.
One of the most interesting points is that people people report that the experience retains its sense of realness indefinitely.

Astral Dreaming
Are we really just dreaming or are we really astral traveling? The answer seems certain to be no, were not dreaming. Characteristics of dreams are that they are unlike real life. Dreams are often vague, hard to remember in full and fade over time. The character of astral travel is that it is real. It is easy to remember, and you recall everything that happened during the astral travel experience. The experience is easily remembered in detail and the experience does not fade over time. Also astral travel can happen while the person is awake. People who astral travel have no doubts about what has happened. The dream theory is mostly pushed by people who have not yet experienced astral travel.

The Scientific Evidence
During experiments on astral travel volunteers who were able to leave their body were wired up to an Electroencephalograph machine. The EEG instruments are monitored by electrodes placed on the volunteers scalp. These electrodes record the electrical potential of the celebrial cortyex.
The following results were recorded
Alpha waves decrease.
Betta waves increase, indicting the volunteer is awake.
Electrodermal activity falls.
Respiration rate increases.
REM is absent.
No Theta or Delta waves.

The tests show something is happening, but not exactly what that is. Another test involved getting a person to project and getting him to reveal numbers that were written on a board in the next room. Seven numbers were used in this test.
However the volunteer was at no stage able to recall the seven numbers. However he did on one occasion recall six numbers in the exact order. This in itself indicates something.

In another test a female volunteer was able to recall conversations in another room. There is certainly a need for more testing over a long period with large groups of volunteers in a controlled situation so as to establish some sort of scientific opinion on this.

Astral Travel Theories
Some people say we are always out.
That the feeling is in fact that we become aware of the fact. That in fact nothing leaves the body because we are having the experience on a continual situation. This theory however offers no explanation as to the feeling of leaving or returning. Some people think that astral projection is Lucid Dreaming. However when you examine the evidence from EEG readings it tends to indicate there is a clear difference. Some people feel that Astral Travel is just an Hallucination. Physiologically the two are very similar. Both have a sense of realness. Both have heightened sense of vision of vision and hearing. There is one major difference though. A person who has experienced both Astral travel and a hallucination can easily distinguish between the two. Some people say that Astral travel is just a Psychosis of some kind. This is a very negative approach and in fact insulting. It also does not stand up to close inspection.

Getting Back In After Astral travel
Getting back in after Astral Travel is really as simple as just Willing yourself back in. Also you will find that any occurrence such as a strange noise, wind or light will take you straight back in. Sometimes while doing astral travel you may hear a loud bang, much like a very loud clap and this will force you back in in an instant. There is no evidence to suggest you will not be able to get back in, get taken over, not find your body or any other such thing. Getting back in is simple and straight forward. The main thing is to relax during astral travel, everything will just move smoothly if you relax.

Astral Duality
In some instances as a beginner in Astral Travel you may become a little confused. One of the main conditions is a state known as Astral Duality. This is a situation were you are out and can see your physical body and yet at the same time you are also aware of being in your physical body and seeing your astral body. Basically its like your consciousness being in both places at the same time. There are things you may do. You can turn away and stop looking at your physical body. Or you can simply just go back in. Its a common experience that sooner or later everyone will go through when they astral travel.

Multiple Astral Bodies
Sometimes when you are astral traveling you may become aware that there are more than one of you that is out. This is what is termed Multiple Astral Bodies. This situation is very rare and nothing to worry about. You will probably eventually come across this if you astral travel a lot It appears to be just an illusion and the seat of consciousness remains with you. Usually You will see just one more of you, but some people have reported seeing several of themselves while astral traveling.

Astral Paralysis
Sometimes when you are about to return to your physical body after astral travel you may get a feeling that your physical body is in some way paralyzed. This may cause you to panic but there is nothing to worry about. This paralysis is normal and very quickly disappears. This state of paralysis is known as a Catatonic State. Most people never experience this but others have it every time.

Astral Wind
Sometimes when you are astral traveling you may encounter a strange astral wind. It may appear very sudden and from nowhere. The Astral Wind may be fast and gushing. It may be a mild wind or it may blow strong. Sometimes the astral wind is very noisy and at other times it is silent. If you are in an enclosed room this may startle you. Do not worry as the wind will cause you no problems.

Astral Noise
Sometimes when you are astral traveling you may hear many strange noises. Sometimes these are very loud bangs, high pitched whistles or even sonic booms. Although it may disturb you the noises can do no harm. Sometimes the noises make you jump back into your body. People have often reported hearing a one note flute in a forest of wind. Some other people report never hearing any noises and seem to travel in silence.

Astral Faces
Sometimes beginners to astral travel may experience seeing faces of a demon type nature on the astral plane. This tends to scare a lot of people, some people may even chose never to astral travel again. But this is nothing to worry about. The best explanation is that it seems to be your own mind playing games with you. Once you realize this the faces will disappear. I'm not aware of anyone having had problems here with these astral faces they have seen, and all report that they eventually drop off never to be seen again.

Bury this bottle close to the front door of your home. If that is not possible place it close to the front door

Items needed:

1 glass or clay jar with cork stopper or lid

1/2 cup salt

3 cloves garlic

9 bay leaves

7 TBS dried basil

1 TBS sage

1 TBS anise

1 TBS black pepper

1 TBS fennel

3 piece of amber

9 iron nails or 9 pieces of broken glass

Have all the items assembled and cast a circle as normal.

Pour the salt into the jar and say:

Element of salt that cleanses and protects,

Add the cloves of garlic to the jar and say:

I add this garlic that protects against negativity,

Break up the bay leaves, place in the jar and say:

I add the herb of Bay that protects and brings good fortune,

Add the basil and say:

I add this basil to keep evil away,

Add amber and say:

I add this amber to bring in positive energy,

Add the sage and say:

I add this sage to drive away negative spirits that would do harm,

Add the anise and say:

I add this anise for restful nights,

Add the pepper and say:

Hold the jar and visualize a white light filling the jar and charging the contents of the jar. Seal the jar.

Gently shake the jar to mix the contents and say.

Put aside until the circle is open and go to the location the bottle will be put and say:

Love Spell

You will need

Pink, white or red candle.

Pink, white or red satchel

1 Rose quartz

Parchment paper – small

Anointing oil

Directions:

(This spell can cast either inside or outside of a circle.)

Write on the parchment paper a list of general attributes you wish your true love to have.

After you have finished, anoint your candle.

Hold the candle in both hands and focus on the candle and what attributes you want in your future lover

and what kind of love you want. Visualize the candle filling with your intent. Once it is full, place it back

in the candle holder.

Light the candle and fold the paper you had written on twice over.

Drip some wax from your candle on the paper to seal it and when the wax has cooled place it under

the candle holder.

Let the candle burn down as completely as possible. If there is any wax left, set it aside to us in the

charm later.

Take the piece of paper, rose quartz and any wax left from the candle and place inside the satchel. Tie

the satchel shut. Carry with you or place under your mattress to attract love.

When you have found your true love, you will need to dispose of the charm to break the spell. Do this

by burning, throwing in a river, or open the satchel and disperse the contents.

Money good fortune luck spell

This spell should be cast on the evening of a New Moon.

You can anoint your candles with pine oil if you wish or any oil
e.g.: olive oil from the kitchen which you charge with your personal energy
and anoint the candles with it to make them tools of magic for the spell.

Use your altar because it has personal meaning to you and because everything
you need should be there.

Light a green candle, and place a bowl and a spoon on the altar before you.

Mix a teaspoon of nutmeg and a teaspoon of cinnamon from your kitchen in the bowl.
As you mix the ingredients, think of an amount of money you would like to see in your
bank account. (Don't go overboard, though, or you will "scatter the spell's energy".)

Continue to focus on that amount of money as you take three coins of low
denomination and toss them repeatedly, until you get one tail and two heads.

Place the coins and the powder together in an old wallet or purse and shake it up as you chant:

Quick money spell

This spell requires good visualization.

Take a green candle and anoint it with cinnamon oil.

Take the bill or write on a piece of paper the amount of a bill you owe and who it is to.

You will need a candle that can burn for 7 days. Place the paper under the candle.
Hold your hands over the candle and say...

"This candle burns to light the way
for the money I need to pay this bill
in a way that harms no one."

Light the candle and burn patchouli incense.

Meditate for about 5 minutes as the candle burns.

Visualize yourself writing the check or purchasing the money order for this bill
and putting it in the mail. Burn the candle every day around the same time for
7 days and 15 minutes at a time. Also, burn patchouli incense every day
too with the candle.

On the last day, burn the paper with the flame from the
candle and let the candle burn completely out.

Money Spell

The Besom and Yule

The broom itself functions as a symbol of the sacred marriage of the God and Goddess, a rite that has been symbolically re-enacted each spring by followers of earth religions for thousands of years.

The pole portion represents the phallus of the God, and the bristles symbolize the mound of Venus that guards the opening to the Goddesses reproductive organs. When both parts are united in a completed broom they form a potent magical symbol of wholeness and creative potential.

This sexual imagery makes the broom the perfect choice for a magical tool to use in fertility rites of all sorts. It is also used at the conclusion of many Pagan marriages (called Handfastings) as the couple "jumps the broom" after exchanging their final vows.

In the distant past women would ride their brooms hobbyhorse style over newly tilled fields to encourage growth, and through barns and pasture lands to encourage the reproduction of animals.

Because brooms represent the totality of the deity-both male and female aspects- they have been used as talismans of protection. They have been placed under beds, across entryways and windows, at the entrances to sacred space, and they have stood guard at hearth sides.

The sweeping action of the broom itself, its ability to cleanse any area through which it is taken and to take whatever debris it collects to someplace else, is so obvious that the magical potency of this simple action is to often overlooked.

An article written by Edain McCoy, tells us about a well-to-do Irish lass named Alice who owned a magic broom that got her into big trouble.

A seventeenth century Irish widow named Dame Alice Kyteler knew the secret of the broom, and was apparently adept at using it to good effect until she was caught in the act and condemned to death for practicing Witchcraft.

Alice loved her children and was willing to use magic to help them succeed. She would take her broom out into the streets of her native Kilkenny late at night and begin a methodical sweeping action that was aimed toward her home. While doing this she would chant a magical rhyme in which she bid all the wealth in town to come to her eldest son William who lived with her.

No one knows just how long the very prosperous Alice had been working at this spell when she was discovered by a neighbour and reported as a Witch, but we do know that she was able to escape her persecutors and flee to England with most of her considerable wealth in tact.

At the holiday season our homes get bogged down with stress and negative energy.

A good way to cleanse your home of negativity is to grab your broom and starting at your front door move in a clock wise motion through your home sweeping out all negativity. Be sure to get under beds and all closets and corners. While you sweep you can chant something like this or use your own words:

"Sweep, Sweep,

With this broom.

All bad out of this room.

All good in.

The bad to never return again."

Be sure your magickal broom never actually touches the floor. Keep in mind that this is a spiritual cleaning and should be done after your regular cleaning for maximum effect.

Calmness and Concentration ritual

This is best performed at night, but it can be done any time of day.
Light the white candle and the incense stick.

Close your eyes and hold the sage close to your nose, and breathe in its calming scent.

By the four corners, elements, God and Goddess too, If this gift seems fit to you,

A peace bath ritual

Draw a bath for yourself. Pour a tablespoon or so of milk into a large bowl of water and say:

Add several rose petals (fresh or dried) to the bowl of water and milk.
Say: 'Thistledown flies through the air...'

The faeries were nestled all snug in their trees,

The elves and the gnomes were down in their burrows,
Sleeping like babes in their soft earthen furrows.

When low! the earth moved with a thunderous quake,
Causing chairs to fall over and dishes to break.
The Little Folk scrambled to get on their feet
Then raced to the river where they usually meet.

“What happened?” they wondered, they questioned, they probed,
As they shivered in night clothes, some bare-armed, some robed.
“What caused the earth's shudder? What caused her to shiver?”
They all spoke at once as they stood by the river.
Then what to their wondering eyes should appear
But a shining gold light in the shape of a sphere.

It blinked and it twinkled, it winked like an eye,
Then it flew straight up and was lost in the sky.
Before they could murmur, before they could bustle,
There emerged from the crowd, with a swish and a rustle,
A stately old crone with her hand on a cane,

“My name is Gaia,” the old crone proclaimed

that Yule is the time of re-birth, and yet…”
“I see no hearth fires, hear no music, no bells,
The air isn't filled with fragrant smells
Of baking and roasting, and simmering stews,
Of cider that's mulled or other hot brews.”

“There aren't any children at play in the snow,
Or houses lit up by candles’ glow.
Have you forgotten, my children, the fun
Of celebrating the rebirth of the sun?”
She looked at the fey folk, her eyes going round,
As they shuffled their feet and stared at the ground.
Then she smiled the smile that brings light to the day,
“Come, my children,” she said, “Let's play.”

They gathered the mistletoe, gathered the holly,
Threw off the drab and drew on the jolly.
They lit a big bonfire, and they danced and they sang.

Making fragrance wax melts

If like me you love having fragrance candles around the home then you may like this idea. How about fragrance wax melts?

You may also know them by wax tarts, wax melts, candle tarts, fragrance chips etc they are all basically the same thing. You can of course buy them already made but depending on the make they can be a little expensive so why not make your own.

You can of course buy new wax for this project and I will discuss in a bit the different wax you can use but being Wiccan I prefer to recycle my candle stubs to use for my wax melts I burn and use a LOT of candles! So I think it is better to recycle the small stubs and reuse them.

So in case your not sure what these are let me explain, basically the candle melts are burned in a tea light burner or oil burner again they are the same thing just known by different names! They do not need a wick you simply pop your melt in the oil burner and light a T light candle underneath and as the wax melts you have a lovely fragrance.

Something to remember here is the melts don’t just fill the room they are burning in with fragrance they will fill your whole house with a lovely fragrance! Wonderful and I love having them burn everyday so my home smells lovely all day long.

So then how do you make these you may be wondering read on and soon you too will be making your own candle wax melts.

Items you will need

left over candle wax
tin can (any type of tin can the kind from vegetables or baked beans (if your from the UK!)
small saucepan
tart pan or muffin tin or whatever you want for a mould (make sure it is safe and strong enough for hot wax to be poured into ~ safety first please) I find using an old patty tin similar to the kind for making jam tarts is perfect) You can of course also use any of the glass containers from candles you have used and are now empty but maybe allow the wax to cool slightly before pouring into these glass type containers.
metal tongs to secure the tin
oven gloves
essential oils ~ whatever oils you like or maybe choose oils for the different sabbats this way you will have wax melts for special occasions
cooker
fire extinguisher (yes I know not everyone has one of these but it really does make sense to have one, if like me you don’t make sure you respect fire safety at all times the last thing we want is any accidents)

Instructions

1. Make sure the can is clean and dry and make a spout by pressing the sides of the can together together to form a spout. Remember wax is very HOT so you do need a spout in which to pour the hot wax.

2. Fill the tin can with the candle wax. Make sure the wax does not contain labels or pieces of candlewick. You can use a mixture of colours, or just stick to one colour if you have enough available. Add five to ten drops of essential oil You don't want the temp of your wax to be above 175 when you add the fragrance. Anything higher will cause the fragrance to "release" or "burn out" of the wax. Bring temp down to around 150 before pouring into mould.

3. Fill the saucepan with a few inches of water and place the can in the middle of the saucepan. Bring the water to a slow, simmering boil until the wax melts completely. You may find that the tin can tends to move around in the saucepan, or tries to fall over, so use the tongs to steady. Do NOT leave the cooker unattended during this step for whatever reason.

4. Use tongs and oven gloves to remove the can of melted wax from the saucepan. Be careful! The can will be hot and is full of boiling wax.

5. Pour the wax into your mould or patty tin. If you have wax left over, you can let it harden in the tin can and reuse it another time.

6. Let the wax cool completely. For easier removal of the wax candle melts, place whatever tin/mould you used in the freezer for half an hour to loosen the wax. Turn the mould upside down over a flat surface and tap the back of it sharply to release the candle melts. They should fall out quite easily.

7. To use your candle melts, place the wax melt in your oil burner ~ remember to think of the depth and size of your oil burner and it will depend on the size of the melts you made so you may need to break one of the melts in half so it doesn’t overflow and go everywhere ~ wax is a nightmare to clean up after a spill so trial and error is needed until you know how much wax to use inside your oil burner.

How to Make your own candles

You will need

Paraffin wax, or scraps of left over candles.
Crayons (for colour), or candle dye.
A strand of candle wick (craft store)
Small coffee can, or small metal container.
Small pot.
Heat-proof containers, (such as small glasses,

Cooking spray. (to coat inside of mold)
Toothpicks
Funnel. (Optional, but makes it easier)
Wooden spoon. (To stir the wax with)
Wax paper or foil. (To catch wax drippings)
Wick tabs (wick tabs are the small metal tabs that are used in candle making.)
Herbs, stones, and oils. (optional)

How to make your candles
Place wax inside coffee can.
Place coffee can inside pot.

Fill pot with water until you reach half way up the outside of the can.
Heat the pot of water until the wax melts. DO NOT TURN HEAT UP TO FAR, WAX CAN CATCH ON FIRE! (at this time, add crayon or wax colouring until you've reached your desired colour.)

After wax and colour is completely melted, turn off the heat. Remember to stir your wax every so often.
Spray cooking spray inside your containers.

Cut off a length of wick and attach it at the bottom of your container with a wick tab.
Wrap the top of the wick around a toothpick and support it on top of the container.

Now is the time to add your herbs, stones, or oils if you desire.
Be sure to place wax paper or foil under your work area before pouring you candles. Wax is not fun to scrape off of surfaces.

Pour the wax into the containers using your funnel.
After you have poured as many candles as you want, let them sit for 4-6 hours before attempting to remove them from the containers. (If you are having trouble getting the candles out of the containers, I discovered they will release easier by putting them into the freezer for approx. half an hour.

After removing the candles from the containers, wipe away the oily substance and let them sit for at least another 3-4 hours to dry.
If you have left over wax in your coffee can, allow it to cool, then put a lid on it and store it away until next time.

Making Taper candles

Just follow the directions above, and instead of pouring the wax into molds, do this:

Start with a long piece of wick - twice the size of your desired candle length plus 3 inches (you will be making 2 candles at once). Bend the wick in the middle and hold it by the bend. Dip the wick into the wax and then lift back out. Getting started is the hardest because the wick will float on top of the wax until it has enough wax on it to weigh it down. Allow it to get completely cold between dipping's when you first start.

After your candle has started to take shape you can speed up the process a little. I keep a pan of cool water nearby and dip the candles in the water after each dipping in the wax. While this speeds up the process a little, candle making is a slow process but very well worth the time and energy you put into it.

Keep dipping the candles and allowing them to cool and then dip again. When you have achieved the proper size, hang them to dry until the wax has set but the candles aren't too hard. Then roll them on the wax paper to smooth out the shape. Once the candle shape is too your liking, dip 1 or 2 more times to make sure your candle is smooth. Trim off any excess wax to make a bottom with a sharp knife. Cut the wick and hang your candles to dry.
