Chalcedony is a widely occurring mineral belonging to the quartz group; these microcrystalline varieties of silica form a wide range of minerals. Flint and Chert are chalcedonies for example and the coloured varieties are sought after. If microcrystalline silica forms in transparent to semi-transparent masses it is referred to as chalcedony; If it forms with bands, an agate; if it forms in opaque masses it is called jasper. Chemically, all chalcedony's, agates and jaspers are near identical, only minute impurities imparted alter colour and appearance.

Silicate 7
Notes
Chert and Flint are common stones occurring in a wide variety of places. The silica is usually infused with impurities and organic compounds which give rise to a remarkable variety of earthy colours. Flint has a long-standing relationship with mankind since it was used during the Stone-Age for making tools. The term Flint is usually reserved for the nodular grey/black masses found in chalk formations. The alternative term for Flint, Firestone, stems from the sparks that are given off when Flint is struck hard. Chert usually appears as woody coloured masses within a host rock and both Flint and Chert are found in huge quantities in gravels, shingles, and on beaches. It is a hard durable stone that takes a good polish.

The bright red ore of mercury is the poisonous metal. Anything made out of Cinnabar would be extremely dangerous to wear or use due to the heat from your skin would be enough to vaporise the mercury from the stone which would absorb into your skin. Most jewellery has a plastic resin, which is layered and moulded to protect you. NEVER use raw Cinnabar.
Cinnabar is an Eastern Indian word for Dragon's blood. The impurities in Cinnabar give it a brownish colour.
Cinnabar is extremely POISONOUS! Do not use it for healing or magical purposes.

If real Coral is placed in glass of cow's milk, the colour of the milk will appear pink or take on a red tinge. Imitation coral will not affect the whiteness of milk.
If a coral is dropped in blood, blood will thicken around it.
A true coral changes colour according to the physical well-being of the wearer. It fades before the disorder in physical health is noticeable and resumes its original colour when physical health is restored.

I'm so grateful to you for posting with regard to what stones can, or cannot, be cleansed in water. I just got a gorgeous blue calcite and was wondering if I could clean it in water. Reading your posting about it, I now know that I shouldn't. How would you suggest cleaning stones that can't be cleaned in water? My friend says she passes hers through incense smoke. Do you think that's a good method?
ReplyDeleteYour blog is absolutely fabulous. I've learned so much from it! Thank you!
Sylvie
Hi Sylvie
ReplyDeleteYou are very welcome and thank you for taking the time to email me. I am so pleased you have learned many things from the blog that is all the thanks I need knowing you are learning and finding the blog useful ~ it makes it all worth while to me when someone follows and takes the time to talk to me so thank you.
Regarding your Calcite there are a few different ways you can cleanse them and yes your friend is right you can use incense smoke and pass your stone thru that, there are also a couple more ways so try them and see what works best for you and your stone.
You can use moonlight to cleanse as well place your stone on a windowsill on a night of the full moon and leave it there happily basking in the moonlight for a couple of nights or you can place on a quartz cluster (Quartz and Carnelian cleanse other crystals but make sure it is a cluster not a tumblestone for this method) also have a look at this link from my blog as it explains in more detail other methods you can try. http://pendencrystals.blogspot.com/2011/02/clearing-energies-of-stones-and.html
Personally I wouldn't recommend sunlight for your calcite as it is a very delicate stone depends what part of the world your from and the strength of the sun at this time of the year.
Please let me know how you get on and please be active here on the site that way we all learn together.
With much love
Kaysha xx
