Amethyst
Quartz 7
Shades of purple

Common
Suitable to cleanse in water
Notes
The only difference between regular clear and amethyst is the colour, which is caused by iron and manganese that were present while the stone was forming. Amethyst is always a shade of purple, sometimes very light, other times very dark, and occasionally you will find red dots or red or blue hues in the stone.
Purple Amethyst turns to green amethyst when subjected to heat (either volcanic or man made).
Amethyst comes from the Greek word amethusos, which means ‘not drunk’. One of the mythical versions of its origins also comes from the Greeks. According to their mythology, a foolish mortal angered Bacchus (the god of wine and intoxication) with an insult. Bacchus, bent on revenge, let his tigers loose to viciously devour the next human walking by. The human turned out to be a beautiful maiden named Amethyst. She was on her way to the temple to pay tribute to Diana. Diana, taking pity on the young girl, turned her into a pure crystal statue so that the tiger’s claws would not mar her beauty. Bacchus was so touched and remorseful at the sight of this statue that he wept tears of wine, turning the crystal purple.
Worn to make the wearer gentle and amiable. Amethyst powers include: dreams, healing, peace, love, spiritual upliftment, courage, psychism, protection against thieves, and happiness.

History
One day an enemy tribe ambushed a party of Apache Indians. The Apaches fought bravely but were greatly outnumbered and driven to the top of a high bluff. Their arrows gone and unable to fight and unwilling to be taken captive, they leapt from the cliffs to their death. Their women were understandably grief-stricken and wept over the bodies. Their teardrops froze when they hit the ground to become the lovely stones we know today as Apache Tears. It is said that whomever owns one of these stones will never cry again, for the Apache women shed enough tears already.
